MAY 2012 Land Committee Meeting Report By Kathy "Daisy" Mellon
BRIDGE OUT! Anyone attending needs to know
that there is road construction with a BRIDGE OUT
on MM just west of the land. You will need to
approach ABATE Acres from the east on MM. (Twit
suggests CTH O to MM. Both roads appear on a
standard Wisconsin DOT Highway map.) Members from
the area report that the bridge will be out at
least until June 1.
The Land Committee held a meeting at the land on
April 15, 2012. Those committee members in
attendance were: Bug, Pogie, Jeff, Kay, Matt, Ric,
Stringbean, Bill Roberge, Ron Zepplin, Nona
Zepplin, Pat Sheridan and Terry Maier. Committee
Chairs attending were: Twit, Andy and Daisy.
Terry Maier is taking over the farming of the land
in the back fields and upkeep that Wally used to
do. He asked that if we decide we want to expand
the current land usage (for the Hummer, events,
etc) we give him a 3 year notice to put the plan
into place. We also asked Terry to provide a lane
through the farmed areas so we have access to get
through them and he was fine with that.
We will be installing an electrical POD for more
access for vendors who need power at the Hummer
and other events. Bug and Steve Panten are
working on this and the cost (approximately $700)
will be split between the land and Hummer funds.
We spoke about the fire rings that will be
available for individual campsites at the Hummer.
We plan on giving out, hopefully 20-30 rings at
the event. Twit is working on getting these and
the number available will depend on how many,
obviously, can be obtained by then. The rings
will be available on a first come-first served
basis, with the person asking for them agreeing to
clean up their site at the end of the event. How
we will assure this is still being discussed
(submitting drivers license or other ID is one
option). Wood will be obtained from a local Amish
Farmer and sold in small amounts for a nominal
fee. ABSOLUTELY no outside firewood will be
allowed into the grounds; we do not want possible
parasites from other areas to infest our beautiful
trees. Picnic tables will also be available for a
$5 donation. Evan has agreed to deliver to the
requested area.
Land Warming is set for the weekend of May 18th.
Some of the projects Pogie and Twit have planned
are:
-
Paint and seal the roof of the pole
barn/bar.
-
Build a countertop for the admissions gate
staff
-
Finish up work on the people hauler for
the Hummer
-
Spray weeds that are growing on existing
roads and paths
-
Install a new sump pump hose in the
trailer
-
Level the first aid trailer and build some
sturdy steps for it
-
Move the POW sign to a more visible area
away from the bar chip and ticket sales
area.
-
Repair the flag pole lights
-
Plant trees and shrubs
-
Install a culvert
-
Fix the snow fence around the property and
behind the stage area.
-
Plant flowers by the flag pole
-
Repair street lights
-
Mow the grounds
-
Install an outlet in the admissions
building
-
Repair the bucket rack
-
General cleaning of the bathrooms, bar
area and meeting area.
Also regarding land warming weekend, Pogie wanted
the workers to know that he and Twit have gotten
permission to purchase a 1/4 barrel to reward
those workers who wish to partake, on Saturday
night. He said those who show and WORK will be
rewarded. Those that want to come out on Saturday
evening and enjoy the camaraderie are welcome, but
need to bring their own beer-Per Pogie. Also new
this year, a patch that states "I did time at
ABATE Acres" for the workers. Same rules apply as
the free beer. Pogie wants those that come out
and work hard every year to be rewarded for their
efforts. Also, as in the past, everyone who
attends is asked to bring a dish or two to pass.
This evening camaraderie is always a fun way to
wrap up the weekend and congratulate each other on
a job well done. And EVERYONE is invited to land
warming, whether you have been there in previous
years or not, we always welcome new faces and hard
workers!
And now for the WISH LIST:
-
2x6 8' long boards for projects upcoming.
(250 would be sweet) Twit says if
everyone who comes to land warming and the Hummer
would bring him just 1 board, we would
have enough for a major project.
-
Perennial flowers to plant on the grounds,
specifically around the flag pole first
then other areas. Please no HOSTAS though, we all
agreed that we have enough of those for
now. The flowers can be brought to land
warming weekend, then we could get a head start on
the process so they look really nice by
party time.
-
Round-up weed killer
-
Oil (10W 30)
-
Transmission fluid ATF3
-
Anti-freeze
