Shade for ABATE Acres?
By Pat Sheridan, Land Committee Chair
Wouldn't it be nice to sit in the shade
on a hot HUMMER day? Now is your chance to get
active in the future of our property. As a
preview, we planted 18 -- 10-12' tall
hybrid maple trees. These autumn blaze maple
trees have excellent growth characteristics, as
well as, disease resistance. The average growth
rate of these trees is 3 feet per year, so we will
get to enjoy their shade and beauty in a
relatively short time.
We started with a row to shade the spectators
during the bike games. The rest of the trees were
planted in the in-field tent camping area.
The plan is to collect tree sponsorships
throughout the year and plant as many trees as we
can next spring. All sponsorships will include a
name on a plaque to be displayed in a building at
ABATE acres. For additional details on how to
"sponsor" a tree refer to the order
form on page 16 of your June 2017 newsletter.
I want to give a big "thank you" to
everyone that helped plant and now maintain the
Now that the weather is nicer remember that as
an ABATE member you are free to use the property
whenever you want. It is a great place to make
your home base when you want to ride any direction
to see this beautiful state of ours. This place
is yours so please use take advantage of it.
Please remember that we ARE NOT a public
campground. You must be an ABATE of Wisconsin
member to camp there. Want to bring your friends
along? Sell them a membership!
On another note, if anyone has access to the
large cable spools that we use for tables in the
bar area, we would love some new ones as our
current ones could use replacing.
