Dear Cuz,
I heard that we are taking a vote on a by-law change at our big meeting in October. How can our laws be changed mid-stream?
Playing By the Book
Dear Bookie,
Believe it or not, ABATE of Wisconsin is almost as old as I am, and I’m no spring chick. What may have started out as good and sound policy in 1974 might not be exactly what we need today. If things stayed the same, we would still be buying bread for 25 cents a loaf and eating lunch at the Woolworth’s counter. Wouldn’t that be Jim Dandy!
We all need a good physical once in a while to be sure we’re still good, don’t we? That’s exactly what’s happening here. It is time to go over some older language in our by-laws and bring it up to date. Does that mean that ABATE is going to change because of it? Heck NO. All that is happening is a change in some wording so going forward things are more easily managed in the future. For example, our by-laws say that the Safety Coordinator runs the Safe Rider Program. That’s true right now with Gary Klinker, but will that always be the case? What if at some point our Safety Coordinator lives in Kenosha and doesn’t want to commute to Sparta/Tomah and be responsible for the Safe Rider Program?
What does all this mean? It means you need to be informed of the changes and read page 18, so you know how to vote come October. This gives you plenty of time to get any questions answered if you don’t understand something before you cast your ratifying vote.
To quote one of my buddies from the 60’s – The Times, They Are A Changing!
See you on the road,
Cuz
