Writing from Sturgis-since I didn’t get it done before the trip. Sadly, on the way out here we got word of Deb Butitta’s passing. She will go down in our hearts and memories as one of the giants of motorcyclist’s rights. Her contributions are too many to list. She will be greatly missed. Ride Free Forever.

Safe Rider just got our new Royal Enfield bike last week, so I can’t give you the promised road test yet. Our classes are filling up into September already. We have had a good season so far. We have a couple of possibilities for new rider coaches.

Now for the fun stuff. We got to Sturgis late yesterday. It rained all the way out. Due to Shawn’s new knee and very little riding last year, and my recent leg injury that is not fully healed, we hauled the bikes out. The rain was not a problem. Today’s forecast was for rain at noon, so we were up early and riding by 7:30 in 46 degree temps. Had a great ride in the Hills-100 miles before breakfast followed by more riding right up to the rain that was predicted for noon. I can’t believe the forecast was that accurate. Weather for the rest of the week looks fine so we should have three more days of many happy miles.

As always, riding out here is a fine way to practice skills. With all the curves and hills to work on braking points and setting up for corners. Watching constantly for critters keeps you on your toes. If you do all that well, you can still take in the beautiful scenery and still survive. If you have never ridden in the Black Hills other than during Sturgis week, you should really try it some time with very little traffic. It is a lot more fun and a lot safer.

I hope I have seen you at Summer Hummer and that it was a success.

Ride Safe,

Gary
