Yesterday, April 20th, Region 7C set up an informational booth during the Flood Run, as they have for many years. The weather was not ideal with a few snow flurries in the morning and a cold, windy day. Even with the less than perfect weather, we still had a chance to talk to bikers about ABATE and tell them who we are and what we stand for. We also were lucky enough to get a little tv news coverage and that never hurts.
The Flood Run has a history of giving. In 1965, 12 motorcycle riders rode 90 miles to Winona, MN to help sandbag during the 1965 flood of the Mississippi River. Most of the original 12 spent the next several years in Vietnam, but all were back home by 1970 and they decided to carry on the tradition. Jim Noteboom named the ride the Flood Run. As the years went by, a fall version was added running down Wisconsin 35. Now the run is a loop in the spring and in the fall, going down both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the river.
This run gives the rider many options for doing part or all of the designated route and similar to ABATE of WI., is run by dozens of volunteers. Their passion for children and generous giving of their time is what permits this huge event to happen each spring and fall. Proceeds help support the Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
If you never rode at this event, you should give it a try. Riders run through many miles of the Mississippi River Valley with many activities to take advantage of along the way for enjoyment. This is a great time to talk about ABATE of Wisconsin. Explain why this run, and our way of life, is in jeopardy. What can they do about it? Join ABATE and help us keep pushing for our motorcycle rights.
Membership Opportunities are around every corner. Be sure to put these riding season events to use and always, always have a membership application in your back pocket.
Ride Safe, Ride Free, Ride with ABATE.
