Summer Hummer Update

By BG Shooter

I spent some time yesterday in my little woods, cleaning up the sticks burning the brush, just spending some time outside enjoying the clean air and sunshine. They call this spring but they forgot to tell the thermometers because the temps have only been hitting a high of about 35 along with flurries. One thing though, and maybe it is just me, the sun seems warmer on my face and the wind does not have the cold winter edge to it.

So, the last couple of months we have been talking about all the fun things the “Hummer” is bringing this year. We have grilling, delish food vendors along the fine eating places in town. We have the activities like the bike games, loud pipes and low and slow. Of course, we have the beer bobbing along with the tattoo contest. So many different things to do we should add another day or two to do them. Don’t forget you will be seeing all your friends from across the state all coming together for this event. You know those people you may see out on “faceplant” as Hardtail calls it but you only get to see them live and in person at the “hummer” and maybe at the State Meeting.  We also kept you busy ahead of the event ordering tickets along with getting your order in for the 2018 t-shirt with the new design (deadline is May 18 – see the March or April newsletter for the order form.) So, what else can the normal person do to make this event a little special. Remember if you want to be involved with Merrill and Mad Dog you need to be there early Friday. The plan is for them to do their schtick at about 9 am and that it lasts about 2 hours. It should be a lot of fun and interesting to see how something like a television show comes together with a couple of guys putting their spin on grilling. Details will be made available when the showing of this will be.

New for 2018 Summer Hummer Poker Run! The committee has identified a few stops in the counties surrounding the Hummer that you can get on your way to the event, or during the event. If you’d like a entry sheet to use on your way to the Hummer just email news@abatewis.org and tell Marlene is you want it emailed to you as a pdf or mailed to you already printed (make sure to include your name and mailing address!)

Don’t forget the new Campsite Hospitality Award.  This is what you make it. Maybe you want to decorate your campsite in a fun and attention grabbing way. Maybe you have a fun game that people can stop by and enjoy with you at your campsite. Or maybe you brought along extra food or drink to share with your fellow campers. Or…? Mystery Judges will be wandering the grounds, seeing what’s out there for hospitality… and awarding what they see as the winner.  Have fun with this, and we’ll all have fun right along with you.

Well if you have some free time come up to YOUR land and help out on the weekend of May 18-20th and help out at the land warming. There are all those spring projects that need to be taken care of to make the land a little nicer, the buildings a little cleaner. And at the end of the day, yes, the beer or soda will taste a little crisper because you accomplished some projects along with your good friends and fellow members.

Stop up and give the boys and girls a hand planting some trees that are ordered. No, you won’t be able to put a hammock up yet for this hummer. But in a few years maybe they will give your camp site a little shade from the sun or god forbid rain.

What else can you do ahead of time? Well, start thinking about how can I give those guys and girls a hand that make this event a kick butt time? Well, all different people are needed help making sure things run smoothly. Some things are really simple and take only a few minutes. They run from cleaning out the restrooms. A couple people can get this done in 20 minutes. To taking the Toxic Taxi around to pick up the garbage bags. To greeting those coming in the front gate giving them their tickets along with just checking to see later on making sure those that entered have paid. Want to see how the other side of the bar is? Or maybe collecting some money for beer chips or selling raffle tickets? Grab your friend or spouse and sign up for a shift and earn your ABATE Bucks to be used for product or beverage purchases.  By volunteering to help out a couple of hours you are giving the person that just spent the last 8-10 hours there a much need break to go enjoy some of things you spent the last day or two enjoying.

This is the countdown when you read this article. The time is drawing near. The excitement is building. Remember to get the days off of work, check over your vehicle, order your tickets, shine up your dancing shoes and we will see you at the “Hummer”!

Till next month…
